Comment on Leadership – From the Top. We understand business is more than IT by Shaun McKay

A very appropriate article. I've seen many companies that have been talked into implimenting very fancy and expensive IT systems that never deliver the returns the company thought they'd get. It's really important to understand the business, the commercials and the dynamics of the particular business before trying to advise on IT solutions.

I've previously been caught in situations where finance was left out of the loop while operations were driving a requirement and we spent months assessing and planning for it - only to find after all that effort that the company could not afford to move ahead when the plan finally reached the finance people!

A lot of time and effort can be saved by ensuring each part of the business is involved at an early stage. We've also found that better solutions and decisions are made with all departments represented early on.

IT doesn't miracilously make businesses succeed - it helps take the owner's vision and makes it effective and efficient. IT supports business, not the other way around!

Are you asking about how Siri works or more how voice recognition works in general, because they are as similar as they are different. We'll simplify it massively; you press the button, your voice is encoded and sent across the Internet to a server in the cloud, (belonging to Apple), that server (or typically a farm of them), assess your voice, using speech recognitiion algorithms, and interprets your request against a lookup database of possible matches, based on things such as speech type, dialect, accent, and then a response is triggered based on that result. That response could be a hook via an API into an App, for example, 'what is the weather today' launches the Weather app etc etc. Fairies, Pixies, and hope & faith come into the mix too, but for a really indepth look at how voice recognition works, take a look here http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/how-apples-siri-really-works/62461

I'm really loving the theme/design of your website. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues? A handful of my blog visitors have complained about my blog not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera. Do you have any advice to help fix this problem?
